Important settings changes for Windows XP Service Pack 2 users

XP Service Pack 2 updates Internet Explorer to include a pop-up blocker. This function prevents the Bluesocket log out box from appearing after logging in to TeleGeneration. In order to allow the Bluesocket box to appear, do the following:

Step 1

Open Internet Explorer and click "Tools" on the menu, then rollover "Pop-up Blocker" and click "Pop-up Blocker Settings"

Step 2

In the Pop-up Blocker Settings window which appears type in the following IP address into the "Address of Web site to allow:" box.

212.248.232.60

Click "Add" and ensure it appears in the "Allowed sites" list, as below:

This will now allow the Bluesocket box to appear.

If you have another pop-up blocker installed (e.g. Google, Yahoo etc) you may need to make similar changes to allow the logout box to appear.

What is Wireless Networking?

Wireless networking is the use of wireless enabled devices such as laptops or PDAs to pass data between each other and the internet.

Many new laptops and PDAs already have wireless technology integrated, Intel’s Centrino chipset is a common example. Laptops and PDAs can also be wirelessly enabled by using one of the wide range of plug in cards. See "what do I need" for more information.

To ensure compatibility and agreement of standards, the WiFi Alliance was established in 1999 by several of the leading wireless LAN manufacturers, and today consists of over 200 member companies to ensure product interoperability. When purchasing wireless technology, look for the WiFi logo.

There are many different wireless standards, but the 2 most popular are 802.11b and 802.11g which operate on the 2.4GHz spectrum. 802.11b is the more widely used of the two with data transmission speeds of up to 11Mbps, however this is gradually being replaced by the faster 802.11g with transmission speeds of up to 54Mbps. The two standards are compatible with one another. Typical operating ranges of the 802.11b+g standards can be as far as 100m although quality of signal and transmission speeds will fall considerably the further away from an access point the user is.

TeleGeneration’s expanding network uses 802.11b+g wireless access points connected to high speed data lines and the latest in authentication technology to provide a seamless link from your wireless device to the World Wide Web, and beyond!

How do I sign up to TeleGeneration?

View our range of tariffs available, and sign up here.

What does it cost?

If you already have a wireless enabled device (laptop/PDA) then the only cost to you is the subscription to our service. Should you require a wireless card for your device, see "What do I need" below.

What do I need?

  • A laptop or PDA

  • Wireless capability

  • To be near a TeleGeneration access point

  • A subscription to our service

If your laptop/PDA comes equipped with a wireless device, then you're nearly there, all you need to do is ensure it is configured correctly. If you require a wireless card for your device, we recommend the Linksys WPC11 or WPC54G pcmcia cards for your laptop. If you have a PDA, we recommend the Linksys WCF12 compact Flash card.

Register for our service. You can also sign up at one of our venues using the sign in page you are automatically directed to.

How do I connect?

Read our guide on how to connect and how to configure your device.

How do I become a venue?

We are always looking for new venues to install access points, if you would like to ask about becoming a TeleGeneration venue please contact us.

How do I recommend a venue?

If you are a TeleGeneration user and would like to recommend a new venue, please contact us.

Why won't the service work?

Ensure your device and browser is configured properly.

We aim for continuous up time for our access points, however, due to circumstances beyond our control, access points may experience downtime. If you experience this problem please contact us with details of the problem and we will address the issue immediately.

Why can't I send Emails from my POP3 account?

You need to change your SMTP settings in your email program (e.g. Outlook Express). Try one of the following:

  • Ask your email provider (usually your ISP) for outgoing mail server authentication settings to allow you to send email from any location.

  • Find a third party outgoing mail server that will allow you send email from any location - try a search on google

What is Skype, and can I use it?

Yes, Skype can be used on the TeleGeneration service. It allows you to make high quality voice calls to your friends over the internet. It is available to install on your laptop and your PDA.

From the skype website:

Skype is the next phenomenon from the people who brought you KaZaA. Just like KaZaA, Skype uses P2P (peer-to-peer) technology to connect you to other users – not to share files this time, but to talk and chat with your friends.

The technology is extremely advanced – but super simple to use... You’ll be making free phone calls to your friends in no time!

How can I protect my computer whilst online?

Whilst connected to the internet, any computer is susceptible to malicious viruses, spyware and hackers. In order to protect your computer whilst using the internet we recommend the following:

  • Frequently updated antivirus software: Norton Antivirus is a common example and often comes free with new computers. However Grisoft have a free version of their constantly updated AVG antivirus software which is available to single users.

  • Internet firewall: Windows has a built in firewall which can be enabled by right clicking your wireless internet connection in "Network Connections". Under properties click the advanced tab and tick the box next to "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet"

  • Frequently updated spyware removal software: Spyware can slow down your computer, hijack your internet browser and put your data at risk to theft and misuse. A good free spyware detection and removal application is Lavasoft's Ad-aware.

In order to keep your computer protected and virus free, you must ensure your respective programs are constantly updated and run frequently. As a general word of caution, be careful about what links you click, programs you download and e-mail attachments you open while using the internet.

Why do I keep having to log in?

If you have a firewall enabled, you must ensure it allows "incoming echo request". This allows our network to check if users are still logged in and to continue their session. If these requests are blocked, our network assumes you have turned your computer off or moved out of range of an access point. As a result, your session is automatically ended and you will be required to log in again.

To allow incoming echo requests in the windows firewall:

  • Right click your wireless network connection in "Network connections"

  • Click properties, then advanced

  • In the advanced tab, ensuring the windows firewall is enabled, click the settings button at the bottom.

  • Now click the "ICMP" tab, and tick the box next to "Allow incoming echo request"
